Bob,

I work in a part of British Aerospace which designs and manufactures
composite nose radomes for aircraft   I had the Europa composite material on
the roof run through our performance simulation programme.  All assume 1.2
GHz. Angles of incidence are between a line joining antenna face to
satellite and a line normal (perpendicular) to the surface of the composite.

Incidence       0 deg    loss 0.0199 dB
                     10 deg   loss 0.0204 dB
                    20 deg    loss 0.0219 dB
                    30 deg    loss 0.0249 dB
                    40 deg    loss 0.0303 dB
                    50 deg    loss 0.0404 dB
                    60 deg    loss 0.0615 dB

All are negligible.

BTW take care to protect (locate separately or screen) the GPS antenna cable
---From your comms. antenna.  Many GPS receivers radiate RF interference and
this applies to their antenna leads as well.  Just try yours out first with
a hand held and rubber duck as a sensor.

I am trying to decide how I need to mount my GPS antenna and need some
advice.  Can I mount the antenna beneath the aircraft skin or do I need to
cut a hole and bond it through.  I was thinking of the area between the
doors as a location.

Don't want to cut the hole if I don't have to and would appreciate and
advice/experience that you all may have.  I will be using a Magellan EC-20
with a remote antenna.
