While in casual conversation with a PFA inspector (currently looking
after 4 Europa projects in the Bedfordshire/Northants. area), he
mentioned some interesting snippets which bear wider dissemination.
In forming the wing leading edges, the manual advises bonding the 2-layer
cloth to the back of the spar, which involves forming a 90 degree angle
between the (eventual) flying surface and the rear vertical surface of
the spar. This has proved difficult to achieve without rucking of the
cloth and consequent bubbling over the top surfaces of the spar. The
repair is to remove the bubbled matting and replace with a couple of
layers of single-ply cloth. Apparently, the join is plenty strong enough
without bonding to the back surface of the spar - *** but you should
check this out before contemplating a unilateral mod. on mere heresay ***
I understood that the Eurpoa's leading edge wing profile is more critical
than most. In view of this, it is somewhat surprising to learn that the
foam is being delivered an eigth of an inch wider than the spar...
Finally, a cautionary note: it appears that a significant minority are
'closing up' prematurely. The inspector then has no other choice but to
have it opened up before it can be passed.....
