A new home for the Forum - Part 2

Subject: A new home for the Forum - Part 2

As I mentioned yesterday, we are undertaking the move of the forum from the
Avnet
server where it has been for several years, to
nothing immediately except to reply to the joining invitation, as described
below.

Why ?
====

There are several perceived advantages to the move. The group will be configured
so as not to pass on mail attachments. This will
have the effect of making it insensitive to messages posted in HTML, they will
be delivered as text messages - no more problems with
HTML messages for receivers and no more nagging of the senders of HTML messages.
More importantly it will completely prevent the
transmission of viruses through group messages.

It also offers a web interface to the archive of group messages and a more
useful
indication to the sender that a posted message has
been refused (an immediate notification is sent, it doesn't just get bounced and
maybe picked up manually some time later).

There are new sections in the FAQ introducing these facilities more fully and
these
will be available in a day or two on
<http://www.crix.org.uk>.

How ?
====

The changeover is designed to be as painless as possible. During the next day or
two you will receive an invitation from the
moderator of the new group (me) to join the group. Just reply to this message
when
you get it, no need to do anything else (i.e.
press Reply and then Send). Then carry on using the forum on Avnet for the time
being. (Should you decide you want to quit the
forum, then either don't reply at all, or mail me directly at
<moderator@crix.org.uk>.)
Note that although I have the title of
---From the invitation list those people who posted 'Remove' messages a couple
of
weeks ago.

When everyone is in the new group I will announce a changeover date, after which
all messages should be posted to the group at
<Europa-Forum@yahoogroups.com>. If you have the forum address in the Address
Book
of your mail program, you should change it at that
time from <europa@avnet.co.uk> to <Europa-Forum@yahoogroups.com>. There is no
need
to stay subscribed to the Avnet forum, though you
can if you want to (messages sent there will be forwarded to the new group, so
you might see some duplication if you remain
subscribed to the Avnet forum). The new posting and unsubscribe addresses will
be sent by Yahoo as part of the welcome message.

What Else ?

group (otherwise there is no requirement to register, the thing will go on
acting
as a mail forum just like it used to, but with the
different posting address). It tells you, for example, how to cope with the need
(if you have it) for different send and receive
addresses or for extra send addresses.

The List Support Site <http://www.crix.org.uk> continues unchanged.

Andrew Sarangan's archive site (see FAQ) continues unchanged, and will archive
messages from both old and new forums.

The FTP site and the new Europa Club web site continue unchanged.

If you would like to join the Europa Club, the Membership Secretary, Rowland
Carson,
can help you <europa-club@rowil.clara.net>.

In the event of problems, please contact me on <moderator@crix.org.uk> [if you
get no response in a few days, please try again on
john@crixbinfield.freeserve.co.uk , as my domain redirector can be erratic].
